Dypsis ambositrae (Ambositra Palm)

Dypsis ambositrae – Ambositra Palm
Rare • Elegant • Cold-Tolerant

A critically endangered palm from the high plateau of central Madagascar, Dypsis ambositrae is a truly exceptional species rarely seen in cultivation. In its natural habitat, only a few plants survive among the mountain forest remnants at elevations of 1300–1500 m.

This palm forms a smooth, ringed trunk reaching up to 7 m tall, topped with a graceful crown of arching, keeled leaves and a soft grey crownshaft. The stiff leaflets droop gently at the tips, giving the palm a refined, elegant form suited to premium landscapes and collector gardens alike.

Surprisingly hardy for a Madagascan species, the Ambositra Palm thrives in cool tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate climates — tolerating light frost and brief cold spells once established. Easy to grow and maintain, it’s an outstanding choice for landscapers seeking something truly unique and enduring.
