Butia catarinensis — Rare, Compact Palm with Architectural Form
Butia catarinensis is a newly recognised species from the coastal restinga vegetation of southern Brazil. Previously grouped under Butia odorata (and often mislabelled as B. odorata or B. capitata), it is now celebrated as a distinct and rare palm in cultivation.
Smaller and more compact than Butia odorata, this palm has a slender trunk rarely exceeding 2 m, topped with a neat crown of stiff, upright grey-green leaves. Its architectural form, wind resistance, and adaptability to coastal conditions make it an ideal feature for prestige gardens and high-end landscape projects.
Size: Supplied in a 500L bag with a 0.9 m clean trunk
Use: Perfect as a specimen tree or focal point in coastal and luxury designs
Fruit: Produces small, edible fruits with a unique jelly-like flavour
Age: 30–40 years
A refined alternative to the more common Butia, B. catarinensis combines rarity, elegance, and manageable size, making it a standout choice for statement plantings.
